Youth summit set for April 23 in Leominster

LEOMINSTER — The 11th annual North Central Youth Leadership Summit, takes place on Friday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of North Central MA, 365 Lindell Ave.

The Youth Leadership Summit originated more than 10 years ago to counterbalance the negative press youth were receiving, by bringing greater awareness to and appreciation for all the positive contributions youth throughout North Central Massachusetts were making in their communities.

Up to 250 youth participate in this annual event. Highlights include:

* Keynote address with youth activist and 2007 Brower Youth Award Recipient, Carlos Moreno from Dorchester;

* Youth and adult led workshops on youth service and leadership;

* Information tables of youth resources and services in the area;

* Leadership Awards and scholarships;

* Live entertainment by DJ Maverick; and

* Free lunch and T-shirts to first 200 youth registrants.

The purpose of the event is to celebrate, support and encourage youth service and leadership throughout North Central Massachusetts. Youth ages 13-17 are encouraged to attend and may register at www.youth-summit.org.

The Youth Leadership Summit is presented by LUK, Inc. and event planning partners Fitchburg State College Upward Bound Program, BWR/YWCA, the Office of District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., UMass CMCC Youth & Family Center, and the Boys & Girls Club of North Central Massachusetts.

It is funded in part by the state Department of Public Health Youth Violence Prevention Program and the Massachusetts Commonwealth Corps.
